Studio Egret West submits plans for three housing towers on Edgware Road

The AJ100 newcomer has applied to Barnet Council to construct the trio of buildings rising from 20 to 24 storeys on a plot in Hendon currently used by a Honda car showroom and a servicing centre.

The Rockery at the Hyde scheme, for developer Parkside Investments, would feature workspace, a community centre, a crèche and a café as well as public gardens.

More than a third of the homes in the development would be affordable.

A pair of two-storey podiums, linked by a bridge, would accommodate flexible workspace 'configured to allow for a range of entrepreneurs and makers to flourish' as well as a café and dedicated community facilities.

A garden would sit on top of the podiums, 'weaving playful interventions among verdant and sensory planting'.

The 'tenure blind' homes are designed to sit in the towers above the podiums. 'Our approach here is a response to the consented developments to the immediate north and south of the site,' said Studio Egret West.

'But rather than continue the prevailing rectilinear townscape that is coming forward, we've purposefully departed from it, and sculpted three octagonal block forms. These buildings relate well to the existing site geometries while allowing more air and sunlight in between them.

'Careful rotation of the forms and carving of the roofscapes allows optimal aspects and views out, with internalised private amenity space interchanged with inset balconies to create a staggered façade with interesting depths and reveals.'

Studio Egret West founder Christophe Egret said: 'With high-density projects there is more than ever a responsibility to enhance amenity space, for play, for an appreciation of nature and for enhancing biodiversity. The stepped gardens of The Rockery aim to set a new standard for high-quality amenity.'

The practice hopes to gain planning approval for the scheme this year.
