HTA Design has been given the green light for a major residential scheme in Ilford consisting of a cluster of towers up to 36 storeys in height.

Redbridge council backed the planning officer's recommendation to approve the seven-block scheme last week.

Developed for Telford Homes, it will provide 447 student bedrooms and 837 new homes, 35% of which will be affordable, along with ground level retail, office s and leisure space.

It will be located on a 2ha site of the former Britannica Works factory, a manufacturer of photographic materials originally founded in Ilford in 1879.

The company, which trades under the name Ilford Photo, was one of the earliest makers of photographic plates and established Ilford as a global centre for the industry,

Elements of HTA's scheme will be inspired by the history of the firm, including the names of public realms spaces and wayfinding points.

A green space which historically stood at the centre of the former factory complex will also be recreated and will form the heart of a network of connected space totalling nearly 7,000 sq m in area.

The approval follows HTA's planning win for the second phase of the Meridian Water regeneration in Enfield, north London, in October.

The scheme, which the practice designed with Hawkins Brown, will include nearly 700 flats and commercial and leisure space.
