East London 35-storey tower approved
30/6/22
Councillors have approved plans for a 35-storey tower on the edge of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in east London.
The London Legacy Development Corporation's Planning Decisions Committee granted consent for the building, known as S1, within the International Quarter London (IQL) development in Stratford.
The approved tower will provide 272 homes, along with 302 square metres of flexible commercial space.
A 14-storey block was also approved this week for plot S11 of the £2.4bn IQL scheme, which is backed by a joint venture of developer Lendlease and Department for Transport subsidiary LCR. Block S11 will feature 78 homes, all available for social rent.
Almost half of the units across the two buildings will be studios or one-bedroom flats, while 41 per cent will feature two bedrooms and the remaining 9 per cent, or 32 units, will have three.
The pair of hexagonal apartment buildings will incorporate green roofs, planted terraces and pathways, allowing plants to spiral up the structures.
Lendlease Construction will build the two towers. Alison Brooks Architects led the design, while Aecom has been named as the structural and civil engineer, among a raft of consultancy roles.
Bek Seeley, managing director for development Europe at Lendlease, said: "These new homes
will add to the growing diversity and vibrancy of IQL and its position as one of London's most exciting new neighbourhoods."
Transport for London requested a payment of £250,000 from the developers towards the long-awaited creation of a south-western entrance to Stratford station and the relocation of a lift.
The body pointed out that the new homes would increase use of the transport hub, which was described in planning documents as experiencing "serious congestion". The payment was secured as part of the Section 106 agreement for the project.
