Cardiff Tower Project Moves Forward

A proposed tower project in Cardiff has taken a significant step forward.

Developers of the planned tower at Harlech Court in the city centre submitted a planning application in December 2024. Initially announced in 2021, the project was envisioned as a 35-storey structure, potentially making it Wales' tallest building. However, updated plans from the Draycott Group now propose a 30-storey tower.

A design and access statement from CWA Architects, prepared for the developers, highlights that the building aims to contribute to Cardiff's housing targets in a "sustainable location." It also notes that while the original concept was to integrate into the city's "established tall building group," the design needed to remain economically viable.

Cardiff Council approved the demolition of Harlech Court, a 1970s office block and former site of the popular bar Porter's, in July. The proposed development will include 340 apartments and mixed-use spaces on the lower floors, with potential amenities such as a gym, café, lounges and retail options. The apartments are expected to primarily feature one-bedroom units, with fewer two-bedroom options and no studios, reflecting the growth of co-living trends in Cardiff.

Another proposed skyscraper, a 35-storey tower on Wood Street, is considered a strong contender to become Wales' tallest building. Approved in June 2023, the 113m structure could soon redefine the Cardiff skyline. Meanwhile, a separate screening opinion application has been submitted for a co-living development at an unspecified height, reflecting ongoing interest in reshaping Cardiff's city centre.
