Approval For 46-Storey Residential Tower

4/7/23

A specialist residential developer's plans for a build-to-rent scheme in central Birmingham featuring hundreds of homes and a 46-storey tower have been approved.

Located next to Centenary Square and adjacent to the City Centre Gardens, Court Collaboration's proposals for Brindley Drive include a 46-storey residential tower and an additional 15-storey structure providing 581 properties.

Designed by CallisonRTKL, Ora comprises a mixture of one- and two-bedroom units, along with private amenities such as rooftop facilities, flexible co‑working space and gym.

Birmingham City Council's planning committee reviewed the application on 27 April.

A report for the committee said: "The proposed development would see the delivery of a high-quality development residential development in a sustainable gateway location.

"The proposed 581 residential units would make a meaningful contribution towards Birmingham's housing shortfall and contribute towards the regeneration aspirations for this part of the city centre."

It added: "The scheme would provide economic and environmental benefits by means of employment, visitor spend during the construction phase as well as re-use this brownfield site and increase the biodiversity value. Furthermore, the scheme would not impede future development on the adjacent site nor have an adverse impact on residential amenity."

Members voted to approve the project, subject to conditions.

In response Alex Neale, managing director of Court Collaboration, said: "We are thrilled with the council's decision to grant planning permission. This ambitious project will reinforce our commitment to operating at the forefront of sustainable design and innovative construction.

"Ora will also contribute to the exciting transformation currently taking place in Birmingham. This isn't just a building or a home; it's the new face of renting. It's a lifestyle choice designed to foster collaboration, engagement and socialisation with your neighbours and the wider community. We look forward to announcing a start date for the project in the near future."
